The way a push button switch is wired depends on its type and the required control function. Common push button switch types include single pole single throw (SPST), single pole double throw (SPDT), double pole single throw (DPST) and double pole double throw (DPDT). 1
Single-pole single-throw pushbutton switches have only one closed state and one open state and are usually used for simple on/off control. When wiring, connect one end to the power supply and the other end to the load. When the button is pressed, the switch closes, current flows, and the load operates.
The single-pole double-throw push button switch has two states, a closed state and an open state, and can be used to control two different circuits. When wiring, connect a power source and a load to each end.
Bipolar single-throw pushbutton switches also have two states, but are used to control two independent circuits.
The double-pole double-throw pushbutton switch has two common terminals and two switching states, which are used to control the switching states of two circuits.
